Recognizing the signs of Intimate Partner Violence

Some signs can make it difficult to determine if you are in a dangerous situation. However, domestic violence is about power and control, and even seemingly small signs can point to a much larger issue.

At WAVI, we’re here to guide you in assessing your case and coming up with a solution that allows you to safely leave a dangerous situation.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, call the WAVI crisis line:

888-716-WAVI (9284)

  • Domestic violence is a systematic pattern of controlling, coercive, and violent behaviors intended to punish, abuse, and ultimately control the thoughts, beliefs, and actions of another.

    Signs of domestic violence include:

    Isolation

    Threats of suicide

    Intimidation

    Destruction of property

  • The Power and Control Wheel was created by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, and shows tactics abusers use to keep survivors in a relationship. The Power & Control Wheel lists examples of each form of abuse.

  • Sexual assault is an act of violence and involves nonconsensual or unwanted sexual touching or sexual act. Sexual assault is an expression of anger, power, and aggression. It’s about control and domination, not about sex. Sexual assault is a crime.

    Acquaintance or date rape

    Marital rape

    Sexual harassment

    Indecent exposure

    Stranger rape

    Incest
